The Sandia Mountains

The Sandia Mountains

The Sandia Mountains are located in Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties, just east of Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The Sandias are situated in the Cibola National Forest and the range is protected land.  The highest point of the mountain range is Sandia Crest.  The mountains are a fault block range on the eastern edge of the Rio Grande Rift Valley.

One striking feature of the Sandia Mountains is the watermelon-colored glow that appears during sunset.  The word "Sandia" is Spanish for Watermelon.
